Project Hope...New Beginnings

We will be partnering with Washington Irving Education Center (WIEC) for this year's Community Service Project to help make and distribute Literacy Survival Kits to adult immigrant and refugee students in their English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.

The Literacy Survival Kits will be in backpacks designed for this project. They will contain an assortment of items needed by the individuals, including:

  • pens
  • pencils
  • 1-subject spiral notebooks
  • CDTA bus tokens
  • ESL workbooks & language dictionaries

How you can help:

  1. Donate a complete kit for $30. You may chose a language or allow us to decide the language based on need. The languages available are: Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Farsi, Arabic, Haitian-Creole, Russian, Polish, Thai, Japanese, Brazilian-Portuguese, and monolingual.
  2. Make a monetary donation towards the purchase of items for the kits.
  3. Donate the following items to be added to the kits: pens, pencils, 1-subject notebooks and CDTA bus tokens. These items should be placed in a sealable bag with the donation form attached.

We will be collecting donations between March 1 and April 18. You may pick up donation forms at any SCP Library or online. Monetary donations should be made payable to:
SCPL Friends of the Library and may be dropped of at the Reference Desk, Central Library or mailed, with completed donation form, to:

All other donations should be dropped of at the Reference Desk, Central Library. We will also be collecting donations at Jamie Ford's program on March 27 at Schenectady County Community College and all other OCOB programs.
