The Friends of the Library coordinate and provide funds variety of programs for SCPL.

Monday Noon Programs

The Monday series of talks is held at noon in the McChesney Room of the Central Library on Clinton Street. You may bring a bag lunch; coffee and tea are available for a nominal fee. The room is equipped with special devices for the hearing-impaired. These programs are also broadcast on the Schenectady Public Access channel. See program listing for days and times.   • Books Sandwiched In
    Coordinated by Linda Witkowski
    A series of reviews of current, non-fiction books by local people who are chosen for their interest in the book topics.
  • Table Talks
    Coordinated by John Karl
  • Spring Specials and Fall Features
    Coordinated by Gioia Ottaviano
    These programs are series of discussions based on a selected theme presented by local experts.
  • Science Series
    Coordinated by Walter Grattidge

The Music Committee of the Friends of the Library coordinates music programs throughout the year.

Literary Trips
Program Coordinator: Lisa Holt
The Friends of the Library sponsors bus trips to the homes and museums of famous authors. Lunch at a nearby resort or historical inn is included.

Next trip:
Saturday, May 8, 2010- Historic Hudson: We will be visiting Kykuit, built by John D. Rockefeller and Sunnyside, the riverside home of Washington Irving. Lunch will be at the historic Castle on the Hudson. Registration runs from February 26-April 2. You may pick up the registration form at any SCPL Library or The Whitney Book Corner. Previous trips:
October 14, 2009- We visited Arrowhead, the home of Herman Melville in Pittsfield; and The Mount, Edith Wharton's home in Lenox. Lunch was at the historic Cranwell Resort in Lenox.

June 6, 2009- We visited the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center. Lunch was at the Avon Old Farms Inn.

November 15, 2008- We visited the homes of Louisa May Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne in Concord, MA., and strolled the paths that David Thoreau walked around Walden Pond. Lunch was at the historic Concord Colonial Inn.
