What we do:
The Friends of the Library raises funds through membership dues, donations, and semi-annual book sales. The Friends also operates the Whitney Book Corner, at the corner
of Clinton and Union Streets, where we sell good quality used books, tapes, records and audiobooks and have regular special sales promotions.
We support:
-
Library Collection Development: Book sales money is spent to purchase new and popular material for nine branch libraries.
-
Children's Programs: Funding is provided for after school and vacation week programs, as well as for professional programs and performers for the Annual Summer Reading Club. The Friends also purchases reading incentives such as book bags, bookmarks, posters, puzzles and Summer Reading Club prizes.
-
Adult Programs: The Friends sponsors weekly Monday Noon Programs including Books Sandwiched-In, Table Talks, and the Science Series, and provides funding and volunteer hours for other adult programs, workshops and lectures.
-
Community Outreach Programs: Visits to nursing homes, senior centers and Meals-on-Wheels; Books-by-Mail to the homebound; and lobbying for legislation beneficial to the Library.
-
Staff Support: Funds are provided for conferences, staff development and workshops, and purchasing of special equipment.
