The Board of Trustees of the Schenectady County Public Library has unanimously approved updated expansion plans for the Central Library including a design for a 6,700 square foot addition. The plan was developed by the Library Building Committee, made up of members from the Board of Trustees, Friends of the Library and Library Staff, who previously voted to bring the plan to the full Board of Trustees at a meeting on Tuesday, August 17, 2010.

"I applaud the work of the Library Building Committee in developing a plan that ensures our Central Library Branch will continue to meet the needs of our community,"said Esther Swanker, President of the Library Board of Trustees. "On behalf of the Library Board of Trustees, I am proud of the work we have done in creating this plan and delighted that children will have an area all their own."

The updated plan calls for a 6,700 square foot library expansion and the creation of a new children's area. This expansion will make additional space available for technology services including computer terminals. The first floor and lobby areas will undergo renovation including upgrades to the library's restrooms.

The proposed expansion plan is in addition to upgrades already completed by Schenectady County to the library's heating and cooling, electrical, fire safety, and ventilation systems and asbestos abatement.

"I must also thank the Schenectady County Legislature for their investment in the Schenectady County Library System and the many community members who have made private donations to the project," continued Ms. Swanker.
